The Internet

I love the internet because I can find out jjust about anything I want to know. I hate the internet because i can find out just about anything I want to know. Wait, how can I love and hate the same thing for the same reason?

I’m the kind who always wants to know things: who, what, why, when. To me knowledge is a fount to be drunk from daily. I like to say that the day you stop learning is the day you start dying. The internet puts all kinds of facts at my fingertips. That’s why I love it.

I hate the internet because finding out one fact brings up other, following questions in my mind. So I then look up one or three other things. It can go on like that for quite a long time. They call that going down rabit holes. I can follow enough rabbit holes fr an entire hutch of rabbits.

Take this morning for example. I asked who William the Conqueror’s half brother was I knew that his name was Odo and that he was a bishop but I forgot he was called Odo of Bayeux. Bayeux rang a bell. Reading on, sure enough he commissioned the Bayeux tapestry. I could have searched to remember more about the tapestry, Odo’s life, and whether they were half brothers on their ather’s side or their mother’s. Then I read he had another notable half brother, Robert, Count of Mortain. I hadn’t heard of him. Now I’m curious to read all about him and his relationship to and with William.

That’s a fairly typical example. Sometimes though my itch is scratched with a single query. Like when I asked why the sky is blue. Now I can tell you why, and why the sky is the color it is as dawn and sunset. Fascinating stuff. (And there’s that word fascinating again. Have I entered my Spock period? lol)

So yeah, the internet is a godsend for people like me who are always on the search for input, as Johnny 5 called it. I just have to use restraint to keep from spending all day trying to answer question after question. That’s harder to do some days than others, especially when I’m manic. But it’s good for me to try.
